| Kosuke, being a human from a privileged family, was probably not the best person to understand what all a urakata went through. Especially when he had been so sheltered and had a hard time parsing why people would be so cruel to something that looked so close to humans themselves minus some animal traits. Sure, some were more beast-like than others but that didn't mean they had to be cruel, right...? He wasn't completely oblivious to some of the looks they received...But if he had to play at being master to make shopping go smoothly, he'd do it. Even if he hadn't a clue how a 'proper' master would act. He figured he'd just...be himself...and pretend to own Lissette? Whatever worked, right?
Of course, a 'proper' master probably wouldn't be sitting there asking a slave for her opinion on jewelry but...But...Okay. He wasn't going to get too nervous over this. He just had to stop over-analyzing what was going on and focus on the task at hand. In this case, having the fox so close to him was somewhat comforting. It was like she was some sort of anchor of reality for him. He smiled a bit awkwardly to her and glanced down at the jewelry set she pointed out in the case. It took him a little bit, seeing as there were so many items spread out in the case, but there! The diamonds went really nice with the silver and the blue gemstone. It really was pretty and a good pick, he thought.
But...Something about her statement made him pause. If she had a mom? Oh...That...He bit his lower lip slightly as the comment really sunk in. Should he comment? Or maybe that would be mean? He...sort of floundered for a bit, momentarily imitating a fish as he opened his mouth and closed it a few times, before he ended up blurting: "Um...um...I'm really sorry about your mom! I -- ... I hope you aren't upset..."
Here he paused to take a deep breath, and try to calm himself from all of his inward flailing. "But...but those are really pretty, yes. I think they'd...um, they'd be good." Kosuke realized he was staring at his companion in a mildly worried manner before he finally realized what he was doing and shook himself out of it. "Um...I'm going to ask if I can see the necklace...y-yes..." |

The look on his face went from happy to... confused? Had she said something odd. She went over what she said and hadn't thought anything weird about it. Until he voiced an apology again. About her mom...? Lissette blinked several times. What was there to be sorry about? As an urakata of course she wouldn't stay with her mother for long. But it was hard to miss someone you never met.
Sure as a child she had wondered what having a mother would be like but such thoughts soon waned when she saw her master's family. She was better off not knowing her mother. That way she could picture her however she wanted. As a child she pictured her mother as a beautiful queen who had to give her up to save her from an evil enemy. Now, she just saw her as her reason for being here.
She shook her head, a smile on her face. "You don't have to apologize Kosuke. I'm not upset. I don't even remember her so there's nothing to be sad about. Besides, if it weren't for her, I wouldn't exist at all and I wouldn't be so happy now. I'm proud of her even if I don't know her. So don't be sad for me."
She was flattered that he would feel sad for her but she didn't want him to be. Especially over something that she had gotten over a long time ago. She smiled even brighter when he told her she had made a good choice. He still looked worried but there wasn't much she could do about it. She just smiled and nodded before she returned her attention to the jewelry in the case.
Among them was a pinkish red pendant that instantly reminded her of how red Kosuke had gotten when she hugged him. It made her giggle and her tail wagged at the memory. Today was really fun, she hoped it continued to be. Just as she thought this an attendant caught her eye. The woman looked her up and down, then looked away as if trying to keep her opinion to herself. That was nicer than what she usually got. Instead of dwelling on it she waited patiently for Kosuke to return with the attendant so he could look at the jewelry set.

| Well, at least she wasn't upset about it. That was good, right? Some fear drained out of him at her reassurances that it wasn't that big of a deal. He still felt as if he had been insensitive on accident, but if it wasn't something that bothered her...Then he wouldn't worry about it. Or he'd at least try not to. He reached up and tugged at his scarf for a moment, looping the soft fabric around some of his fingers for a second or two before he released it and glanced elsewhere. The way she explained it made sense. She really seemed to be well adjusted for an urakata. "That's...I hadn't thought of it that way," He admitted with a little sheepishness, laughing quietly at himself. It was just like him to get preemptively upset over something that didn't matter in the end. He shook his head at himself, then pivoted slightly away from the canine to flag down one of the attendants.
"Um...Miss...I'd like to look at this set please," And he pointed out the one that Lissette had chosen, then waited for the woman to open the case and retrieve his selection. While the employee took care of that, he became distracted by the sound of giggling. He blinked once and peered back to the fox and canted his head to the side curiously. Absently he had started to fidget with the edge of his scarf, but his posture was somewhat relaxed. "Something, um, funny?" He asked as he tried to figure out what might cause laughter. As far as Kosuke knew, there wasn't much humor in jewelry. But it wasn't like he got out that often so maybe he was missing something. That wouldn't be surprising at all.
Finally the attendant pulled out the set, and catching the movement out of the corner of his vision, he turned back towards the woman and smiled a bit more as he seen it. "Oh, look Lissette...It's, um, it's really pretty, huh?" Then to the attendant he offered an awkward: "Um...do you do gift wrapping here...?" Never mind the mild surprise in the lady's eyes, Kosuke knew he didn't exactly dress as someone who was well off...But he was much more comfortable in casual clothing than anything overly formal.

When he spoke up asking what was funny, the white eared fox jumped slightly, gasping as if she had been caught doing something. Her cheeks flushed slightly as she smiled, obviously hiding something. "Nothing, Kosuke!" She tried hard not to giggle again and instead returned her attention to the jewelry sparkling behind the glass.
The attendant pulled out the set Lissette had spotted and she thought it was even more beautiful when it wasn't within the glass case. Her smile was wide as she stood beside Kosuke, her hands at her chest trying to hold back the urge to touch it. She nodded vigorously, "It really is! It's even prettier when it isn't in the case! It's so sparkly." Her ears perked at the words gift wrapping. Were you supposed to wrap a gift before you gave it? Did that mean she had been handing out the flowers wrong? Should they have been wrapped beforehand?
Lissette pulled on the edge of Kosuke's shirt again, looking shockingly sad. "Are you supposed to wrap up flowers too? I didn't know..." She looked like she was on the verge of tears. No wonder some people didn't accept her flowers, she hadn't wrapped them first! Her basket hit lightly against her side and she pulled out a flower and handed it toward the attendant. "I-is i-it alright if you could gift wrap this too? I want to learn how." The attendant looked baffled by this question. Instead of answering her, she gave Kosuke a look like it was his job to educate his urakata before excusing herself to wrap the necklace set.
Lissette looked even more confused now, holding out the flower to empty air now.

| Her reactions were just so amusing. He bit his lower lip slightly to keep himself quiet because it didn't seem very nice to laugh at someone so much. But honestly, the way she gasped like she had been caught with her hand in the cookie jar...Kosuke shook his head slightly, smiling a bit while fidgeting with his scarf. "If you say so," He mused with a slight indulging tone to his voice. Something must've been amusing for her to react in such away...But watching her try to hide it was funny enough. And he wasn't exactly the kind of person to pry. As they both admired the jewelry set, he nodded at her assessment. "They are very very shiny...Um...Kinda like treasure, right?" Out getting loot in real life just like in games--Ahh, he was such a dork.
Blinking once, he glanced to her when his shirt was tugged at. Her sad expression made him frown reflexively and, recalling how he comforted his family's shibu inu urakata, he had to resist the urge to pet her ears. "Flowers, no, um...You don't gift wrap those...But when you take them home, you can put them in a vase...? And water them...? That way they stay, uh, nice for a while." He nodded once, hoping the explanation was enough. It wasn't like he was an expert on flowers or anything but he had knew a little. Nodding once to the attendant as the set was taken for gift-wrapping, he then turned back to Lissette...Only to watch her get completely rejected. That was just...so sad. Now he definitely felt like he was in some scene out of a manga. Yeah, no way Takehiko was going to believe his story when he got home...
Reaching out with a little awkwardness, he placed his hand over the fox's so he could lower the flower and perhaps offer some reassurance. "Um...We could...Ah..." He twirled a bit of his scarf around his free hand as he thought. "Do you...want to pick out something for your Master? Then...We won't gift wrap it here...I could, um...Pick up some paper and...we can wrap it together?" Yeah, wow, he was really going out on a limb here...But seeing her so heartbroken, it really tugged at the soft side of him. Seeing her on the verge of tears was horrible, he couldn't let her stay that way...

She should have known something like that would happen. Urakatas weren't accepted by everyone but she really wanted to learn how to gift wrap her flowers. Then Kosuke spoke up. So flowers weren't gift wrapped? She knew about flowers being put in vases, she'd seen it done many times before but she thought Christmas gifted flowers would be different. "Why aren't flowers gift wrapped for Christmas like other gifts?"
She still looked like she was on the verge of tears. The rejection from the attendant had hurt a little. Sure, she knew that most didn't accept her but to have the fact flaunted in front of her, despite her new outlook did hurt. Her grip on the flower didn't falter and she kind of jumped at his touch on her hand but she lowered the flower and seemed to recover from her near-tears state.
She rubbed her arm over her eyes with the flower still in her hand and nodded at his suggestion, a smile appearing on her face. "I would like that." She took her arm away and seemed as if she had recovered from the little ordeal. Her grip on the hem of his shirt loosened and she looked up at him. "What kind of gift would work for my master? Would jewelry work?" She wasn't sure if she remembered Lylia wearing any jewelry so to get her some was a curious thought.
She thought it would be nice if she could get matching charms for herself and Lylia but she would want one for Kosuke too! He was her first friend outside of Lylia! "Is there anyway to get three gifts that look alike?"

| Now that was a question. Why weren't they? Kosuke furrowed his brow slightly, one hand trailing upwards so he could rub at the back of his neck uncertainly. "Well...um...They're really fragile, I guess? So it's a bit awkward to wrap, um...I--I've never tried before, really, but what if you squash the flower?" His shoulders rose and fell with a little shrug and he offered a somewhat sheepish smile. Funny how he could explain the inner workings of a computer or the intricacies of a program all day but explaining why flowers were wrapped made him uncertain. His social anxiety was partially to blame but more than anything seeing Lissette so upset made him upset and thus...well, it all jumbled together truly.
A bit of guilt settled in his chest as she seemed to flinch when he touched her hand, but thankfully soon after she was wiping her face. He smiled when her expression brightened and relief washed over him. Ah, good. He wasn't sure what he was going to do if his suggestion hadn't worked. "Good, um. We can have a look around and see if there's anything your Master might like...Your Master's a girl, right? I...think that jewelry would be good, then," He nodded a few times after he thought it over and smiled a bit more. His hand settling on his scarf absently, he hummed in contemplation.
"Does she have, um, a favorite color?" That seemed to be his go to with jewelry...It sounded like a safe bet and well this was probably the most jewelry shopping he had ever done. At her last question he blinked once and tilted his head slightly, "Um, I don't see why not? There's probably more matching sets around here somewhere...and...hmm..." Nodding once to the attendant to let the woman know he'd be looking around some more, he started wandering further down the case.
"Oh...Um...What about something seasonal...?" He nodded towards a few charm necklaces that had little ornament-styled charms with red and green gems. "That way...It can be a reminder of, um, your first Christmas together too...?"

Lissette considered what he said and it made sense. Wrapping a flower could hurt the flower. She hadn't really thought of that. A flower was too delicate to wrap, so she had been giving them out properly. That was good to hear.
Lissette nodded when he asked if her master was a girl. The next question left her stumped. She had no idea what her master's favorite color was! Maybe it was blue? Or maybe she liked all of them? She drew a lot so Lissette couldn't be sure what her favorite color was.
Her gaze was thoughtful, trying to think of anything that could help her figure out what Lylia's favorite color was but no hint came to mind. Finally she let out a sigh and shook her head. "I don't know what her favorite color is..." Her ears laid back as she continued to try and come up with an answer.
She followed after Kosuke as he went further along the cases. Her eyes went over each piece as he made his suggestion about something seasonal. She considered telling him that she wanted to get something so she could have one for Lylia, herself and him. She wasn't sure how he would feel about that though.
Her eyes traveled over each jewelry set. "Seasonal would be good..." Her eyes landed on something that seemed like it would work. It was a set of charms, three penguins. One had a santa hat on, another had reindeer horns, and the other had a small bit of snow on it's head with a top hat. They weren't shiny or sparkly like the others in the case but she couldn't help but like them anyway.
Lissette immediately pointed them out. "Kosuke, look at the penguins! It says they can be used on a bracelet, a necklace or a cell phone charm. That way you could have one too!" She was smiling very brightly now, no longer any sign of having been upset before.
She looked back at them and smiled. She knew that Lylia would like one too.

| "Ah..." They were both a bit at a loss then, weren't they? Kosuke wasn't sure where to begin with colors for girls either. Besides the stereotypical pink being used for baby girls, he wasn't really sure what else was a safe bet. So he fell silent for a little while as he thought, lips pursed, brow furrowed as he scanned the cases. One hand curled around the hem of his scarf, the other hand raised up to to rake his fingers through his hair, pulling some bangs out of his face. There was a lot of selection in the store, surely they'd find something eventually, right? Hopefully something Lissette would really like for her master...That way they could have a good Christmas. Especially since it was the fox's first, it would be extra special.
"Hmm?" He blinked once and glanced his companion's direction when she spoke up again. Penguins? Penguins were cute. Sidling a bit closer to the case, he leaned over to check out what she picked. Looking over the little charms, he smiled a bit and chuckled quietly. "They're, um, they're really cute, huh?" Definitely a good Christmas present! Lissette was really good at this! Maybe he'd have to make it tradition to bring her along shopping...Well, if her master was okay with that, of course. Maybe one day he could meet the lady.
Then her last comment finally sunk in. She wanted to give one to him? His cheeks colored in a faint blush and he peered at her curiously. "Wait...um...one for me? R...really? That's...That's really sweet of you, um, Lissette," He commented, rubbing a bit at the back of his head. Sure, technically he offered to buy them, but...Honestly he hadn't been expecting that at all. The canine was so nice and kind...He smiled a bit wider, "But...We'd be like, um, a matching set then, huh? That's a good idea...!"

She gauged his reaction for a moment, making sure that he liked them too before she came to a decision. When she voiced what her intentions were, he turned red. Her tail wagged happily at his reaction. She agreed with him, nodding and humming her approval.
Her eyes light up when he complimented her idea. "And maybe you can meet my master too! She'd really like you too!" Having her first two friends meeting inspired her. She pointed to the penguin in a santa hat. "I want that one because it will match my red!" Then her finger traveled to the reindeer one. "That one should be Lylia's because her hair is brown!" Her finger landed on the last penguin with snow and a top hat on. "This one should be yours because it's wearing a gentleman's cap and you're a gentleman!"
Her cheeks flushed but she continued to smile brightly, her tail wagging happily too. If she weren't in a store she would probably be humming too. It was a habit of her to hum whenever she was really happy but she tended to put a cap on it when she was in the presence of others. She tipped her head to the side, her ears following suit like a puppy who was curious about something. "What do you think, Kosuke? Would they be a suitable gift? Will they be hard to gift wrap?"
Her goal was still to learn to gift wrap so that way she could fully enjoy Christmas. So far, it had been a great time. She had even made a friend! It was great~!

| "Oh..." He couldn't help but smile more, all flustered and sheepish with an awkward laugh. Not that her logic was bad, but the fact that she thought he was a gentleman...It just made him feel...good. Happiness settled into his chest and he gave a small nod. The programmer was almost beaming, truly, though his awkward nature kept him from flashing too many teeth. "That's, that's really smart. They all match us..." Here he paused, pursing his lips a bit, all the smiling was going to make his cheeks hurt soon! But he couldn't stop, so soon the expression manifested again. "It'd be, um, nice to meet your master, yes--if you...if you think she wouldn't mind?" Kosuke was the type to always defer to whether or not someone else was comfortable with something. He wouldn't want to upset Lissette's owner, after all.
Considering the charms for but a moment, he continued. "They'd make a great gift, I think. Um...They shouldn't be too hard to wrap, either..." He nodded enthusiastically, attention momentarily catching on her tail. Ah, she was happy, that just made him all the more glad for the situation. This afternoon was shaping up a lot better than what he had been expecting, and he had yet to have a panic attack or anything, so that was a double-plus. "Um..." Kosuke craned his head slightly to catch the attention of the lady attendant. "Can I get these too?" He indicated the penguins, "But don't gift wrap those please."
"Ah...And after this--we can go pick out some wrapping paper. And some tape...Um...maybe some bows..." He idly played with his scarf as he thought, nodding. "It'll be, um, like an adventure," He laughed quietly.

It was only now that she was seeing him with a toothy grin that she was seeing how much he had opened up to her since she had first ran up to him. Her eyes watched him with a new light in them. He was... cute. She turned red at that thought and looked back at the penguins in the case. She wasn't why she had thought that... She hadn't really had that thought about anyone before.
She was a bit confused by the emotion that came with it but she decided that she must really enjoy having Kosuke with her. Lissette didn't think she would have human friends and now she had two! Her cheeks were still pink when he complimented her on who should get which penguin.
When he agreed to meet her master, she had mixed feelings and she wasn't sure why. She wanted Kosuke to meet Lylia but... part of her wanted to keep her new friend to herself. Was she... she was being selfish. She shook her head to shake those thoughts away and smiled.
"I'm sure Lylia would love to meet you! You're a very kind person." She truly meant that and forced her selfishness aside. She was happy to hear him call out that he wanted the charms as well. Lissette pulled a few coins from her pocket and offered them to Kosuke. "Here, I'll pay for them. I-it's only fair since it's a gift from me to you and Lylia."
After she offered them she realized that it may be odd for an urakata to have her own money so she decided to explain it before it was even mentioned. "Lylia gives me an allowance and I don't get anything so I've got a decent amount."
She smiled at him as she offered her money to him. Lissette was trying to avoid the woman attendant since it was obvious that her being a urakata was an issue with the woman. Which is why she offered the money to Kosuke rather than her. Plus... she trusted Kosuke.
It... was nice to trust someone.

| While the attendant was gathering up the second purchase, Kosuke had focused all his attention on Lissette. He was just in such a good mood now. While there was a haze of nervousness in the back of his mind, part of him waiting for something to go horribly wrong or for him to embarrass himself...There was something about the canine's presence that put him at ease. A warm, quaint feeling that he couldn't quite put his finger on. Seeing her blush so dark suddenly made him blink a few times in rapid succession, and before he knew it he too was flushing a deeper pink. Why that was a reflexive response he really wasn't sure, but he couldn't exactly help himself. All her reactions were one part amusing, one part comforting and one part curious. Fingers absently curled about his scarf he again had to resist the urge to pet her ears. Hopefully she wasn't flustered because of nervousness or the tension even he could see coming from the store employees.
Hearing that her owner would be happy to meet him, the programmer relaxed a bit more and nodded. "That's good--I'm glad to hear it, um...I wouldn't...want to upset her or anything..." This he admitted with another sheepish smile, twirling a bit of his scarf between his fingers absently. The second comment took him off guard though and he blinked once. At least it wasn't like he could blush anymore, right? "You're--You're a good person too, Lissette!" Sure, they had just met, but...He could be a good judge of character sometimes, right? True, he was a recluse so it wasn't like he knew very many people, but...He fidgeted more with his scarf before letting out a low exhale. Breathe. It was okay.
"Oh..." It surprised him when she offered to pay, and it showed on his face, confusion entering his expression. But the quickly offered explanation made sense, and he nodded once. "O-Okay, if you're sure," He smiled a bit and accepted the money. Part of him wanted to wave off the suggestion, but it was a part of learning about Christmas, right? And he wasn't the arguing type...Idly he wondered about picking out a gift when she wasn't around so it'd be a surprise...But he'd have to do that later, so he pushed the thought away for now.
Glancing over to where the attendant was waiting, he then peered back to Lissette. "Let me pay and then, um, we can go pick out wrapping paper," He nodded and wandered over to where the check-out desk was. Setting down the coins he received from Lisette, he also pulled out his wallet to cover his mother's gift. After the money had been exchanged, he accepted the bags with a quiet "Thank you." Now...There had to be a store that sold gift wrap somewhere nearby, right?

She could sense that the attendants didn't really like her presence here. It made her want to leave now, like she had out stayed her welcome. The white haired girl focused on Kosuke instead. She shook her head with a look of disbelief. "There's no way you could upset Lylia! I even spilled over a vase full of water once and she just giggled." Then he called her a good person. She brightened instantly. A person, not a good urakata but a good person. She got a little teary eyed at that statement. "Thank you!" She wiped away the small tears on her lashes. Lissette had never cried about being happy. It was odd but fun!
Lissette smiled and nodded to Kosuke as he went to pay. She took up a spot by the door and waited for him, looking out the window at the people passing by. Her breath fogged the glass slightly, and she pulled a little away so her breath couldn't do it. If she didn't think she would get in trouble for it, she would have drawn a snowman where the fog was but she restrained herself.
She looked out the window and right across the way was a store that was decorated in the colors of winter and Christmas. She wondered if that kind of store would have wrapping paper for her gifts? As if on cue, she heard Kosuke's footsteps approaching. Her ears twitched and she turned to face him, pointing towards the window and the shop. "Kosuke, would that store have wrapping paper?"

| Seeing her get misty-eyed caused that strange warmth to well up in his chest again. Not quite anxiety but not something he was used to either, so for the moment he filed it under 'relief' as he knew she couldn't possibly be crying because she was upset. She was smiling too much for that, right? Which was great. He felt like he was truly making her happy and that was a great sensation. With that in mind, his own smile lingered across his pale features as he stepped over to her by the window. He glanced outside in the direction she pointed, then nodded a few times, bangs flopping. "That, um, that looks good! Let's go check it out," Stepping over to the door, he pushed it open and held it that way for his new friend. "After you..."
He'd wait for her to step out then followed behind, resisting the urge to hum a little bit. It was odd, he was feeling extremely relaxed. It was like his anxiety for the moment had been blanketed by that warm, giddy feeling, wrapped up in its own little scarf, really. That thought made him want to laugh but he bit it back, not wanting to give off the wrong impression. Shaking his head to himself, he made his way across the street, glancing over to the fox now and then to make sure he wasn't walking too fast or anything.
Once they came to the door for the other shop, he opened that as well and motioned her in before following once more. Glancing around the little store, he blinked a few times and hmmed. There's lots of selection..." He considered, then turned to Lissette with a smile, "These are um, your special gifts! So you should pick out what colors you want, okay? And any bows or um, anything else..." Yup, definitely going out of his way to make this special for her.
