Lissette felt like singing! It wasn't too cold outside and so she had gotten permission to go out to the shops today. Her eyes were bright with excitement. Lylia had gotten her a shawl in a red color with white fluff around the edge. It matched with her ears and tail perfectly. She also wore a red dress with black leggings and red shoes. In her hands was a basket full of poinsettias. They were red as well and made her look as if she was one of Santa's helpers herself.
Her cheeks were a little pink because of the cold but she wore no gloves on her hands. As an artic fox, she actually enjoyed cooler temperatures. She was just happy to be outside. As for why, well she had heard of Christmas from her books, and when she was younger her previous master's family would decorate and celebrate it. This was the first year that she would be able to celebrate it too! So when she found out, she immediately wanted to hand out gifts to people but all she had was the flowers that had been growing.
So here she was, standing on the corner of the street with her basket of red flowers, handing them out to passerbys with a smile on her face, wishing them each a happy holiday. It seemed the urakata were less inclined to take the flower she offered. Ever once in awhile a urakata would come up and glance at their master for approval before taking a flower.
Most humans took it and she even got some friendly smiles back. Her tail ended up wagging very fast when that happened. A couple of kids came up and simply stared at her in amazement. She offered them a flower but instead of taking it, the boy pointed to her tail. "Can I tough your tail?" She looked confused for a moment before she moved her tail into his range. "Sure!" The boy pet it with a look of complete astonishment. She knew that not all urakata had tails but it was as if this boy had never gotten close enough to touch one.
In truth, it felt odd to her but it was just a boy so she didn't let her discomfort show. When he had had his fill he ran over to a woman whose back was turned talking to a shop owner. The little girl took a flower, thanked her and ran after him. Lissette found herself liking humans more now that she wasn't being constantly hurt by them. Sure, some humans scoffed at her and others didn't acknowledge her at all but that was a whole lot better than the alternative.
She looked around for the next person she would hand a flower and her blue cheery eyes landed on a man walking in her direction. She stepped up to him with her tail behind her and offered out a red flower with a smile. "Would you like a flower, Sir? It's to wish you a happy holiday!"

| Kosuke couldn't believe it was that time of year again. Time flew by so fast it was crazy. One moment it was spring and he was knee-deep in projects, the next it was nearing on Christmas time. . .And he still had so much to do! He had to pick out presents for his parents and ship them out, and then pick out and deliver gifts to his brother. It all required a lot of effort interacting with the real world, which was a little much for the introvert. If he could have it his way, he'd order everything online...But he knew better than anyone that things on the internet weren't quite what they seemed. Even if it made him uncomfortable, he'd hate to get a gift and have it end up being something not-quite-right for his relatives. So after gathering up his reserve of nerves, he embarked into the world.
He'd just be in and out of the stores really quick, then flee back to his apartment...No big deal, right? He kept telling himself that, even while he was fidgeting absently with the ends of his scarf. Remember to breathe, he told himself inwardly as he passed quite a few people on the sidewalk. It was going to be all right. Even with all the reassurance he was trying to give himself, he still really wanted to disappear into his pea coat. Maybe if he just stood still in one place for a very long time, the crowd would lessen and he could run home...
But no, he had to get this shopping done. He couldn't not get gifts for his family. Deep breath. Insert spine. Run courage.exe. Calm down...
His mind was wandering along those various thoughts when he heard a voice near him. He glanced upwards to see a canine urakata holding a flower out towards him. His first reflex was to blush slightly, just because he was taken off guard and...No one hand offered him a flower before...It was a bit strange.
"Um..." He stammered awkwardly, releasing his scarf to reach out and accept the flower. "Thank you...That's very nice of you to...um...just...do this for people, you know." Wow, he sounded really stupid didn't he? He stared down at the flower in his hands and furrowed his brow slightly, nibbling at his lower lip in thought. "Um..." Did he walk away now? What was the right reaction in this situation? He had no idea. |

The man she approached looked awfully familiar. She wasn't sure what it was but when he spoke she knew exactly why he seemed familiar. He reminded her of herself. Before Lylia and the Auction House. She saw herself in the library in a corner, not wanting anyone near her. Why did he remind her of that?
Maybe because he seemed like he didn't belong here? Not so much that he didn't belong but he didn't seem to feel like it. Still, she instantly felt like he was a kindred spirit, which made her smile brighter. She was just glad he accepted the flower.
He looked down at the flower, obviously feeling shy. Lissette found herself wanting to know more about this person. Since her being bought, she'd learned about tons of different people but not one that reminded her of herself. She wagged her tail happily.
"It's nice to make people happy. It makes me warm, here." She pointed to where her heart was with a slight blush in her cheeks. Her ears perked up then and her eyes got a curious light in them. "What about you? Do you feel warmer there too?"
She put her empty hand on his own chest, not seeing anything wrong with making physical contact with a complete stranger. She hadn't exactly had a situation where she was touching anyone aside from their hand so in her eyes, there was nothing wrong with the touch.
Her hand ended up resting on his scarf as well. It was very comfortable and warm. She'd never worn a scarf before and she wondered if it was even allowed for her to wear one. The fur around her shawl was as much of a scarf as any she knew.

| Staring down at the flower, he spun the stem between his fingers for a few rotations, just something to keep his hands occupied while he thought. Finding words around strangers and new acquaintances was always difficult for Kosuke. If it weren't for the anxiety he felt, he likely would have found it funny. He could be so eloquent online, but put him face to face with someone and that broke down completely. Eventually he tucked the flower into the lapel of his jacket. That seemed like a good place for it and freed up his hands once more to fidget with his scarf.
Realizing that the urakata was talking again, he looked up to her and tilted his head to the side slightly. With her little fox ears and wagging tail, the canine was extremely adorable, like some sketch from some girly manga come to life. That made his cheeks flush a bit at the thought, and he quickly pushed it away. Swallowing nervously, he nodded a bit. "Ah...It is nice to make people happy, um...you're definitely right about that...I...um..." His train of musing derailed when she placed her hand on his chest. It wasn't like the contact was that big of a deal, but he was such a recluse that anyone touching him outside of his family was just...strange.
His face flustered further and he let out an awkward huff, clutching his scarf a bit tighter. "Um...um...Y-yeah. I'm warm there too, now. Um--I--um..." He was stammering like a fool now, he knew. "...What's your...what's your name?" It was the only thing he could think to blurt to distract himself from his internal flailing. |

His face turned bright red and she instantly thought she'd hurt him and pulled her hand away. "I'm sorry! I didn't mean to hurt you!" She held her hand close to her chest, the basket resting at her elbow. She even bowed slightly, her own face flushed. He was stammering so much she instantly thought she must have hurt him more than she had thought. She looked really concerned, her eyes searching for any outward signs of damage. She didn't see any, she'd only touched him.
Was he one of those people that was deathly allergic to fur? Oh no! What had she done! She'd hurt him without knowing it! She was about to offer to take him to the hospital when the last sentence he said caught her attention. Even if he spoke quietly, her ears would pick it up as if he were speaking normally. Her concerned face melted back into a kind smile, obviously relieved that she hadn't hurt him as she originally thought.
Her cheeks were still red due to her embarrassing display a second ago. "I'm Lissette! Lissette Moreno. What's yours?"
He was an odd human, or maybe she just hadn't met enough humans who she could actually get to know? If that's the case maybe she's the odd one and he's normal? Her thoughts began to go in circles with this train of thought. Was it normal for a guy to get red in the face when a girl touched him?
Her previous master had never turned red when she accidentally bumped into him, he was already red when she did bump into him. Her guess was that alcohol made your face red. She wondered if he had had alcohol before and it was only making his face red now? Or maybe her touch was like alcohol and she hadn't realized it with her previous master because he was always drinking.
Curious... She kind of wanted to touch him again to see if he would turn red again.

| "W--what--" was his bewildered response when she suddenly apologized to him. What was there to be sorry for? Nothing was her fault. It wasn't like she had just reached out and in a rush suddenly instilled him with social anxiety. He just needed a moment to breathe and calm down his nerves. He twirled a bit of his scarf between his fingers, head cocking to the side as he watched her...Trying to will his embarrassed blush to go away. It seemed the more he tried though, the worse it got, and eventually he let out a small, defeated huff. Raising one hand, he rubbed at his face awkwardly, turning his head away from the urakata for a moment.
"I'm not hurt..." He managed after a couple more breaths. "I'm -- um, I'm sorry for...worrying you. I didn't...I didn't mean to..." Not that it was very logical to answer an apology with another apology, but he couldn't really help it. When he got nervous, it was hard to think perfectly straight. This was even more true when he was worried about upsetting someone. This kind fox had given him a flower and was being rather civil with him so...It would just be wrong to make her angry. So he was trying to be as normal as he possibly could.
Unfortunately that only meant he fidgetted more because then he felt even more self-conscious, but...well, what could he do?
"Ah...Nice to meet you, Miss Moreno...That's...um, that's a pretty name..." There he went, being awkward again. Ugh. He bit into his lower lip and smiled a bit sheepishly. "I'm Kosuke Akiyama. Did your...did your owner send you out here...?" |

The way he turned away from her, the way he stammered an apology. She recognized all of that. Lissette understood it in herself but he was a human, what did he have to fear so greatly? He didn't have to worry about being hit because he looked at someone or have to worry about being dragged to a black market to be sold. The girl wasn't upset about this, just curious. She had always thought that she would have been better off born as a human and yet here was a human that seemed like he was having a hard time too.
She gave him a smile, one like Lylia gave her when they first met. Her smile had saved Lissette so maybe, she could do the same? He played with his scarf and she was curious as to why. This guy was very very curious and strange. Her head turned at an angle as she watched him play with the scarf. She laid her ears back when he called her Miss Moreno. She'd never been addressed as such. "You", "Urakata" and other dirty words that she wouldn't even think were used to address her. She'd only ever called others my Mister or Miss. To hear herself addressed as such felt oddly pleasant. Her cheeks reddened and she glanced at her feet with a smile on her face.
"Y-you can call me Lissette, Mr. Kosuke." Her ears remained low as she continued to answer his question. "Well... she'd didn't exactly send me out. I just wanted to experience Christmas spirit since it's going to be my first time celebrating it." She felt a bit embarrassed admitting that and found that she couldn't look up at him, as her cheeks were getting even redder.
"I wanted to have someone say happy holidays to me too." Sure, Lylia would gladly say that but Lissette hadn't bothered to ask her to. She wanted someone to genuinely tell her happy holidays and she figured if she did it, then someone would eventually reply in turn. Even though she had been out there for about an hour, she hadn't gotten one back. She'd heard many thank yous and many just smiled and walked on. These made her happy but not as much as she thought hearing the words repeated back would.

| Sometimes Kosuke wished he was like the computer programs he spent so much time writing. If he could just reach into his brain and interject a little code to turn off all his nervousness, that would be great. Even better would be a simple on/off switch for 'internal flailing'. Yeah. That would be awesome. As it was, he simply stood awkwardly, twirling some of his scarf about his fingers, picking at the hem and half a dozen other things. It was really very hard for him to keep his hands still when he was nervous...And since he spent most of his days doing typing or other such things with his hands, it made since that he'd be very fidgety. Finally he glanced back up to her, and he was confronted with a brilliant smile. He blinked once, unable to not relax at least slightly at the sight. It wasn't like she was going to bite him or anything, right?
"Alright, um, Lissette it is. But--uh--that means, um...you can just call me Kosuke too--because um...'Mister' makes me feel old, haha," He released his scarf long enough to sheepishly rub at the back of his head. As she continued speaking, he listened to her words, his brow furrowing slightly. The first time celebrating Christmas? Naturally he knew and had heard that for some urakata things were bad but...That thought still seemed wrong to him somehow. Likely his upbringing gave him a rather naive view on things. "That's kind of her to let you do that, um...Everyone--no matter who--should have a chance to experience Christmas, um, yeah." He offered an awkward smile of his own and nodded once, long bangs swaying.
"Oh! I'm s-sorry. I do hope you have happy holidays, though...I...um..." Now he felt a little guilty. He glanced down for a few moments, returning his hand to his scarf. Inhaling deeply, he peered back up to the fox and gave her a sheepish yet hopeful look. "Uh...You want to learn about Christmas, r-...right? Would you, um. Would you like to help me...pick out a present for my mom...? I've always been bad at--...er...presents for girls..."

She blinked repeatedly at his request to call him just Kosuke but she smiled again before trying it out. "I'll call you Kosuke then." It was nice to call someone without any titles. It felt a lot easier to get close to someone when you didn't have to refer to them as if they were a superior. It seemed that he was feeling a bit more relaxed with her now since he let go of his scarf. Or so she thought because he went right back to it again.
When he called Lylia kind, she raised her head. Her cheeks were still red but she smiled up at him anyway. "She's the best. I don't know where I would be if it wasn't for her!" She moved her basket so that she held it in front of her with both hands. By now, most of the flowers within were gone. She hadn't started out with too many but after an hour of handing them out, or trying to, she had given most of them away.
When she realized her words seemed to have hurt him she raised one hand and waved it as if trying to clear the air. "I didn't mean for you to apologize! I just thought it would be nice to hear." She hoped she hadn't done anything to ruin what she thought may be a friendship and when he raised his head the look on his face seemed to give her her answer.
She liked his smiles. She was thinking that he looked great with a smile on his face when he invited her along. Her smile brightened and excitement radiated from her. "Really!? I want to help! Please let me!" She had never picked out a gift for anyone before and maybe this would be a good way to learn so she could get a gift for Lylia. She didn't know what to get her master and if Kosuke would help her learn than she could surprise her!
She hugged him around the waist without thinking about it. "Thank you so much! I've never gone shopping for gifts before!" The basket bounced against her side in protest to the sudden movement and it took her a moment before she realized that she had hugged him. Lissette turned red, looking up at him, and pulled away. "Uh-... I-I... Sorry..."

| Hearing that her owner really was a kind woman made him smile a tad more. That was quite the relief, really. While he was a recluse and had a naive outlook on some things, he wasn't completely oblivious to the fact that the common view on urakatas weren't exactly favorable. Many just treated them like objects. But the shibu inu he had as a kid with his family had been so sweet...He just couldn't handle being mean to them. Especially not when they were so nice to him in return. Honestly he couldn't understand how someone could be mean to a creature like Lissette. Sure, she had ears and a tail but that didn't make her less deserving of kindness.
"That's good, um, I'm really happy for you," It felt so awkward to say that outloud, but he was sincere, and in an effort to try to communicate that further than the tone of his voice, he gave an almost exaggerated nod. He just didn't want her thinking that he was being sarcastic or anything. Really, he over-thought the things he said in real life...Which was a bit silly, seeing as there was less to rely on in terms of vocal tone and expressions in text as there was fact to face, but that was Kosuke for you.
The excited response he received from his question took him a little off-guard, but he was happy. It meant that she didn't think him strange for randomly inviting her along. "It's--it's nothing to thank for, I just thought--um...that it'd...be nice--" And then she was hugging him and he froze like a deer in headlights. His cheeks flushed a dark pink and he stammered out an incoherent mess. When she released him and apologized, he shook his head, long hair swaying, and huffed an awkward breath.
"It's okay--I--I just--um---ah..." Curling his fingers about his scarf tightly, he blurted, "So do you--um...want to...go check out a store...?"

Lissette's experience with sarcasm was too low for her to pick up when and where it would appear. His words sounded genuine to her and her smile didn't falter for even a moment. She was happy that someone could feel happy for her. It made her feel like she had a friend. She thought of Lylia as a friend too but she was also her master so it wasn't the same as having someone who had no reason to want to be near her.
She felt him stiffen when her arms went around him but after she had backed away and he shook his head so frantically, she had to hold back a giggle. This human was very sweet. She really liked him. Lissette hoped that she could count him as a friend. Not only was he treating her as an equal, he was going to let her tag along so she could learn more about Christmas. All she knew about it was the gifts, which was how she had ended up handing out flowers in the first place. She knew there was more to it than that and to have the opportunity to learn excited her.
Her cheeks were still red as she nodded. She didn't know which way to go though and so, she did what she usually did when someone had to lead the way. She grabbed the hem of his shirt with one hand and stood at his side. She wasn't sure where she had picked up such a habit but she was pretty sure it had something to do with the maid who had taught her how to clean. As a child, the maid was her only form of comfort and so she had tagged along at her side more often than not.
"Yes Mr- I mean... Kosuke. Lead the way!" Her voice couldn't mask her excitement and her tail was wagging happily too. She couldn't wait to see what kind of gifts one gets for others on Christmas besides flowers. | |

| Lissette's smiles and enthusiasm were infectious, really. He found himself relaxing a bit more, his own expression widening. Even if he was still somewhat flustered and feeling rather embarrassed, because of his natural awkwardness...This was still nice. Kosuke spent so much time alone at his apartment that company that was this pleasant was really something he was enjoying. Even if he bumbled a lot...The little fox didn't seem to mind, so that was good. Rolling his shoulders slightly in an effort to further push away the tension from his social anxiety, he nodded towards his new acquaintance and moved to walk.
He hoped Takehiko would be proud of him. What he was doing was really out of the norm for the programmer. Inviting a stranger along to help him shopping? Being hugged by a girl? Big brother would probably not believe him at first. That made him laugh inwardly and he shook his head slightly. While they traveled, he glanced back to make sure he wasn't going too fast for Lissette. He didn't want to be rude to the canine after all. Once he was sure she was still there, he started surveying the choices of stores that lined the streets. "Um...Maybe a jewelry store...?"
Ah, Kosuke was indeed really bad at this. He gave Lissette a sheepish look and approached the door, pulling at it and holding it open for her. "After you~." That was the gentlemanly thing to do, right?

He seemed to relax a lot more. This made her happy simply because she didn't like having others feel awkward because she knew how bad it felt to feel out of place. She returned his nod as they both began to walk, and her trying to mirror his own strides.
She didn't know why she enjoyed doing that but it was fun to try and match another person's footsteps. It was a little game she played by herself that didn't really require the other person to even know they were playing too. Her hold on the hem of his shirt helped her keep up and keep in stride, and she tried hard not to pull on the material as they went.
When they got to the shops, he spoke and she looked up from the footsteps to listen. She blinked repeatedly at his suggestion of a jewelry store. She had never been to one nor had she ever worn jewelry but she did remember her old master's wife always wearing some form of necklace or other. She hummed in agreement, her tail wagging once.
"My old master's wife loved jewelry. They sparkle really brightly. I'm sure your mother would like it!"
So they went to the door of the jewelry store where Kosuke opened the door. She expected him to enter and her go in behind him but instead, he offered for her to go first. She looked confused by this and at a loss of what to do. She was a urakata, most would make her fall behind them when they entered. She'd been taught that a long time ago.
The little fox held tightly to the hem of his shirt before she took a deep breath and let it go and entered the store, stepping to the side so Kosuke could enter. When he did so, she could quickly grab the hem of his shirt again.

| Her tail wagging was somewhat distracting. Watching the little appendage go was so amusing, it gave him a strange, warm fuzzy feeling, and made him smile a tad more. If he kept this up, his cheeks might start hurting. Really he wasn't used to smiling so much while talking with someone else. What a nice experience. The anxiety in his chest had lessened to a dull throb. If only everyone was as easy to talk to as Lissette. He supposed there were a lot of things factoring into it. She was a canine urakata, which he vaguely associated with safety and good feelings from his childhood. Her attitude and personality also helped a lot, being so nice and friendly. All in all he was rather happy with this accidental encounter, despite the awkwardness. Her reassurance that jewelry was a good pick made him nod with enthusiasm, long bangs flopping. Good. With all the commercials they ran on TV about jewelry for girls...Well, it seemed obvious.
Lingering by the doorway, he blinked a bit as she clung to the hem of his shirt and stalled. "Um..." He began with some uncertainty, head cocking to the side as he looked at her with concern. Was she okay? "It's...um, it's alright, really..." He did his best to sound confident and nodded towards her with a smile. When she finally moved inside, he followed behind her, careful not to crowd her too much. He didn't want to bump her tail or...anything else that might seem weird. Yeah, he probably shouldn't worry so much but it was just in his nature. She grabbed at his shirt again and though it was just reflexive for him to be somewhat tense, he still did his best to smile.
In some ways, she seemed nervous like him, and that was oddly comforting to him. Of course it also made him feel guilty, what, being happy in a way that someone was nervous...but...well...Shaking off that thought, he glanced around the store, nodding absently to the attendants on duty. "Ah...um..." He stepped over to one of the cases, looking over the various trappings kept within. "What...What do you um...think girls' favorite colors are...?" As if all girls could be summed up with one favorite color. Ah, he didn't mean it in a bad way, he just sort of furrowed his brow a bit in confusion and glanced over to Lissette hopefully.

It seemed that he valued her input on the jewelry, or at least that's what she thought when he nodded in response. He was smiling a lot more than she thought he would. It was nice to think that she could inspire him to smile. She remembered when her previous master would get angry just at the sight of her. Lissette knew that it wasn't her but the reminds that she brought with her that caused him to become so angry with the sight of her. It still hurt though.
To inspire happiness in another person was good for her. It seemed to push the past further and further away. Soon, all the pain and despair from back then would be small scars that had healed. She wanted her heart to be like soil, at first all the plants had been uprooted from it but with time, the plants would grow again.
His encouraging words at the doorway helped her feel a bit better about walking ahead of him, though she tried her best not to draw any attention from onlookers. When her hand took hold of his hem again, he tensed a little but smiled. She wondered if it was a bother to him for her to need to hold on to him. She thought about letting go but couldn't bring herself to. She didn't want to lose her new friend.
She followed on his heel, trying to avoid the eyes of the attendants. Lissette had found that shop owners and their employees could be a bit on the mean side when it came to urakata. Which was reason enough for her to stick close to Kosuke. When they came up to the case though, all thoughts about the attendants faded away. She let go of Kosuke's hem to put her hands on the case so she could look at the sparkling jewelry inside. They were so pretty! And there was so many colors!
She gasped at how pretty they all were. Lissette thought immediately that jewels should always be together because the seemed to sparkle so much more that way. She almost missed Kosuke's question, and seemed to snap out of her daze. "Ah... um..." She wasn't quite sure how to answer that question. Personally, she would have liked anything in the case if it was given to her. She looked at Kosuke then back to the case, looking for one she would give to her mother, if she remembered her or knew her.
Her blue eyes landed on a silver necklace and earring set. The necklace chain was thin and the pendant was a small cluster of 4 diamonds that chained down to a larger dark blue jewel. The ears had the same pattern. She pointed to it in earnest. "If I had a mother, I would get her those! It's small enough that she can wear it all the time and the colors are really pretty! It reminds me of winter!"
